From the artist's desk... I've just returned from "The Art of the Portrait" annual conference held by the Portrait Society of America. This year it took place in Reston, VA and included demos and slide shows by some very accomplished, well-known artists. The 4-day event is a wonderful time to network with other artists, view original paintings by competition finalists in person (believe me, they are stunning!), and benefit from panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and one-on-one critiques. The international competition held each year by this organization is like the Olympics of portrait painting. I consider this event to be one of the highlights of my year, because I return home feeling rejuvenated about painting and excited to apply everything I've learned. It makes me feel like I have the best job in the world.
I'll go into more detail about the conference on my blog, but for today, I'd like to talk about the importance of having an excellent portfolio. The purpose of the portfolio is to showcase one's best work in a beautiful and professional manner. Although my work is also displayed on my website, it is important to have a "hard copy" on hand as well. The PSOA conference offered portfolio critiques and a competition for best portfolio. Artists could lay out their work on a table for others to look at, and later, the portfolios were judged based on quality of work, presentation, materials, and creativity. This year my portfolio was a self-published book, and featured just my portrait work, divided in sections for children and adult portraits. The layout was quite simple, but effective (you can view it by clicking the image below). I was thrilled when they announced that my portfolio won an honorable mention! It certainly was an honor, especially when artists whom I admire were asking to look at it.

In other news, my painting of Dale has been accepted into a regional juried competition. The Texas and Neighbors Art Exhibit will be on display from May 22-June 26 at the Irving Arts Center (3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX), with an opening reception from 2:00 - 5:00pm on May 23. I also have over a dozen pieces available through Fort Worth gallery Weiler House Fine Art. I'm excited about the creative work I'm doing on my own (you'll hear about that soon!), as well as the wonderful commissioned work I've been privileged to paint. Thank you to all of my supporters and clients - you're helping me live the dream! Sincerely, Anna Rose Bain http://www.annasblankcanvas.com/ |
